Each guest room at Hotel SLO features a limited edition print by Los Osos-based artist and Cal Poly professor, Sara J. Franz. The original drawings feature striking architectural landmarks of the town, conveyed through Franz’s unique color palette and style. Out of time and dislocated from the original space, the series of drawings explore issues of visibility in contemporary built environments. For the Hotel SLO, the focus is on a few local treasures (unknown and known): the Octagon Barn, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kundert Medical Clinic, Sunset Drive-In, Fremont Theater, Cal Poly Administrations Building, and Ah Louis Store. Each drawing is an attempt to capture wonderment through the graphite and gouache imitation of modern landscape.
Originally from suburban Chicago, Sara Frantz earned her BS from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a MFA in Painting from the University of Texas at Austin. Her drawings and paintings explore the false barriers that create more imagined than real distances between two points of view. Represented by the David Shelton Gallery in Houston, her work has been included in internationally recognized art fairs, solo, and group exhibitions. In addition, she has attended various artist residencies including Cow House Studios in Ireland, Vermont Studio Center, and NES Residency in Iceland. Frantz currently splits her time between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo where she is Associate Professor of Studio Art at Cal Poly.
